Lau Peng Choong Malaysia

Dr Lau Peng Choong is a Consultant Upper GI, Bariatric and General Surgeon at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur and an Honorary Visiting Consultant Upper GI Surgeon to UMMC. He served as an Associate Professor and was Head of the Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery Unit at University of Malaya until August 2019. His subspecialty interest is in Upper Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery. His training includes a fellowship in Advanced Gastric Cancer Surgery in Seoul, South Korea plus he also did a year of clinical fellowship in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery in Coventry, United Kingdom under the sponsorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr Lau is the current Vice President of the Malaysian Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society (MUGIS) and also the Vice President 2 of the Malaysia Hernia Society(MHS). He helped pioneered the first POEM (Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy) service for achalasia in Malaysia with his gastroenterology colleagues in University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). He was an early adoptor of using flourescent imaging in surgery in Malaysia and routinely uses it during laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and minimally invasive cancer surgeries. Dr Lau has helped trained many young doctors as well as surgeons for the country while serving as a faculty member in University of Malaya. He is currently appointed as the National Upper GI Surgery Subspecialty Training Committee Board Member which governs the training of Upper GI Surgeon in the country. He also currently serves as the National Specialist Register (NSR) Speciality Subcommittee Evaluator for Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery in Malaysia.
